Itinerary

• 1st stop

  Colosseum

  The Colosseum stands at the heart of the city as a monument to imperial Rome. This amphitheater once hosted gladiator contests before crowds of thousands, and its arched exterior still dominates the valley. Inside, we walk the tiers and passages that once carried spectators, soldiers, and animals, and our guide explains how the arena was designed, filled with water, and finally abandoned. Few places bring the scale of the ancient city so close.

• 2nd stop

  Roman Forum

  We continue into the Roman Forum, the vast complex of squares and ruins that served as the political and public center of the empire. Walking the Via Sacra, we pass the remains of temples, basilicas, and triumphal arches, from the Senate House to the Temple of Saturn. Each stone marks a chapter of Roman law, religion, and daily life, and our guide pieces them together into one continuous story of a city that once ruled the Mediterranean.

• 3rd stop

  Trevi Fountain

  The Trevi Fountain is Rome at its most theatrical, a Baroque cascade of travertine, water, and sculpture set against the Palazzo Poli. Neptune rides his chariot pulled by seahorses, surrounded by tritons and shells carved with remarkable detail. We stop here to take in the scene and follow the tradition of tossing a coin over the shoulder, a gesture that, according to local belief, promises a return to the Eternal City.

• 4th stop

  Pantheon

  The Pantheon preserves one of the greatest achievements of Roman engineering. Its portico of granite columns leads into a circular hall crowned by a dome that was the largest in the world for more than a thousand years and remains the widest unreinforced concrete dome ever built. We look up at the oculus, the open eye that lights the interior, and consider how this temple became a church and survived where so much else fell.

• 5th stop

  Piazza Venezia

  Piazza Venezia marks the busy crossroads of modern Rome, where traffic circles the imposing Altare della Patria. This white monument, dedicated to Vittorio Emanuele II, commemorates the unification of Italy and includes the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, guarded day and night. We take in the blend of grand architecture and everyday city life, then continue toward the river and the Vatican.

• 6th stop

  Vatican City

  Vatican City gathers centuries of art and faith inside the smallest country in the world. With our guide we walk the Vatican Museums, passing ancient sculpture, tapestries, and maps on the way to the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel, where Michelangelo's ceiling and Last Judgment fill the walls. The visit ends at St. Peter's Square, framed by Bernini's colonnade.
