Itinerary

• 1st stop

  Venezia Santa Lucia Railway Station

  We meet at Venezia Santa Lucia, the main railway station and the gateway where most visitors first meet the city. It is an easy starting point for anyone arriving by train, and our guide meets us here before we set off on foot into the quieter streets.

• 2nd stop

  Campo dei Tolentini

  The first stop is Campo dei Tolentini, an unassuming square that most visitors cross without noticing. Locals still use it as a meeting place and a shortcut through the district, and it gives us an immediate sense of the everyday Venice behind the postcard views.

• 3rd stop

  Campo San Pantalon

  Campo San Pantalon lies in the heart of Dorsoduro, a few steps from the Grand Canal. The church facing the square holds a remarkable painted ceiling, one of the most surprising works in the city, while the campo itself keeps the calm pace of a residential neighborhood.

  Campo Santa Margherita

  Campo Santa Margherita is one of the liveliest squares in Venice, loved by residents and students alike. We walk past its cafés, bakeries, and small shops, and our guide explains how a campo works as the social center of Venetian life, from morning markets to evening aperitivo.

  Squero di San Trovaso

  At the Squero di San Trovaso we see one of the oldest gondola boatyards in the city, still in use today. From the canal side, we look at the wooden workshops where gondolas are built and repaired by hand, following techniques that have survived for centuries.

  Ponte dell'Accademia

  Ponte dell'Accademia crosses the Grand Canal between Dorsoduro and San Marco, and its elegant wooden structure makes it one of the most photographed sights in Venice. From the bridge, wide views over the Grand Canal open toward the Accademia galleries and the palaces along the water.

  Scala Contarini del Bovolo

  Hidden a few steps from Campo Manin, the Scala Contarini del Bovolo is a late 15th-century spiral staircase whose shape earned it the name bovolo, Venetian for snail shell. It is one of the city's most unexpected architectural gems, and a reminder of how much Venice keeps out of sight.

  La Fenice Theatre (from outside)

  We stop in front of Teatro La Fenice, rebuilt after the fires that twice destroyed it and now a symbol of Venice's musical heritage. From the outside, our guide traces its history, from the great opera seasons to the restoration that returned the theater to the city.

  Campo San Bortolomio

  Campo San Bartolomeo, known to Venetians as San Bortolomio, is a busy square in the commercial heart of the city, a few steps from the Rialto Bridge. Merchants and shoppers have gathered here for centuries, and the square shows how the Rialto area still works today.

  Rialto Bridge

  Our walk ends at the Rialto Bridge, one of the best-known landmarks in Venice, opening onto the Rialto Market area that has been the commercial heart of the city for centuries. We say goodbye here with practical suggestions for the rest of the day and the neighborhoods worth a return visit.
